Dear Pieter,

We have finally settled on a format for our newletters! We hope you like it? As a couple of old guys busy with making arrangements for all our tours, we really get pressed for time, but we so much wanted to find a happy medium for staying in touch and getting our message across.

Please let us know how you like the presentation and also the content of this latest newsletter, your opinion really does matter to us. Oh, and be sure to see our discount voucher at the end of this edition!

We honestly believe our small company is different and offers a more relaxed and comfortable experience to fellow travellers. In terms of wildlife, comfort and relaxed schedules, we think the quality of our organised tours sets us apart from other companies. If you have been with us before, then we know you will agree, if you have not been with us yet, please give us a try and we know you will not be disappointed.

Warmest best wishes,
Pieter and Peter

Our tour to Costa Rica, one of the best birding destinations you could wish for, is designed to be totally relaxed, giving ourselves time to enjoy all the comforts of our specially selected accommodation. The areas we visit each represent a different habitat and provide a wealth of wildlife experiences. Like all our tours, the pace is easy, the food is top rate, the accommodation very comfortable, the company enjoyable and to top everything you can opt out of the group walks and simply relax or stroll around the grounds of each of our destinations. Most of our stopovers are for 3 nights, so you get the idea this is not a tour where you live out of your suitcase. Easy paced birding and yet birding at its best. We registered 430 species last tour and it proves you don't have to rush around to get the best from Costa Rica. Sound good? Why not join us February 2nd 2010 for a very special holiday? Which Binoculars?
Kowa Genesis Binoculars Is a question most of our guides are frequently asked. It is a difficult subject with many fine binoculars available and it can be a matter of need and your budget. We asked Peter (Jones) our senior guide and probably the longest serving birder in our ranks, what would he recommend? .........
"The answer is try as many different brands as possible, purchasing the ones most comfortable for you. Important points to consider are quick/smooth focusing, comfortable feel in the hands, good weight distribution, no distortion and no eye strain after continued use. Of course economics plays a big part on what you can afford, but normally speaking the top end brands do give value for money i.e. They last for many years, some coming with a lifetime guarantee, so go for the best you can afford. At the time of writing Swarovski 10x42 can be purchased for up to US$2,479, Zeiss 10x42 US$2,299, Leica 10x42 US$2,095, Nikon 10x42 US$2,000, Minox 10x43 US$1,549, Kowa 10.5x44 US$1,540. For what it is worth I would go for the Kowa Genesis range, they are optically extremely good and have all the attributes I refer to above, plus they don't equal their weight in Gold!!!"
Gambia & Senegal. Wow! What a great response.

Within just a few days of advertising for participants on our recce trip to Gambia and Senegal, tour dates 12th to 26th January 2010, we were fully subscribed! Gambia, and to a lesser extent Senegal, is very well-known in the world of nature lovers as a paradise for birders. However the infra-structure is not very well developed, which makes it difficult to set up a tour meeting the high Spanish Nature quality standards. Before we really wanted to sell this birding tour we needed to get more practical knowledge about these interesting birding countries. So, we invited you to travel as friends with us on our first "Recce" and share the excitement of discovery. So thanks for such a wonderful response. Seems we attract the more adventurous traveller! Wind Turbines and Birds
Deadly Wind Turbines
For most of our birds, and particularly raptors, using the migration flyway through Spain and crossing to Morocco, life is a constant challenge. In more recent times they are faced with the additional and deadly obstacle of wind farms. These wind farms also compound the risk for these birds when they return to Europe each spring. For whatever reason, many birds do not recognise these large swathes of turbines as a threat.
We are not against wind farms per se, but what has become increasingly clear is the need to site these turbines well away from known and traditional migration flyways or flight paths for birds. In Spain and Morocco it appears no regard for these animals is shown when vested interests are at stake and no accountability is accepted by those responsible for prospecting and choosing areas to site these monsters. No environmental survey can be obtained when requested for these wind farms in Spain and it is becoming increasingly obvious that the environmental impact is poorly considered, if it is considered at all.
We invite you to view firsthand evidence of the horror inflicted by incorrectly sited wind turbines and ask you if you too believe those companies running wind farms should be held accountable for destroying our natural heritage. During the course of autumn migration near to Tarifa in 2007 over 50 Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus met their death by wind turbines. How sustainable are these high mortality rates? VIEW THE VIDEO HERE
