| Dear Pieter, |
|
Welcome to our latest newsletter and the hot house that is Andalucia in July! Where we are based, in the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda, temperatures have regularly hit the 90's and the green of early summer has taken on differing hues of brown and beige. Surprisingly, for many, bird migration has already begun and will build up through each week to peaks in August and September, a great bird-fest for the adventurous birder. There are some very worthwhile birding events here in the coming weeks and we mention a few in our latest and regular feature Spain News.
Pieter is off with our photography tour to Ecuador in August, whilst yours truly is yet again making an appearance at the British Birdfair (Rutland UK) and, as usual, will be in attendance on the Andalucia stand helping to promote this natural wonder of Spain, please look me up if you are going to the Birdfair this year, I will be there on the 20th and 21st August (Marquee 4, Stands 8,9,10).
For the spontaneous traveller, I have a single place available on my tour to Morocco this September, a really different and great tour! Why not join me for this 10 night 11 day safari to the Sahara region from 10th to the 20th of September? Contact us if you have an interest and I'll get straight back with our itinerary and details.
Please keep well and in touch.
Warmest best wishes, Peter & Pieter Spanish Nature |
Spain News - Update
|
It may seem a strange recommendation, as many will feel it is too hot in Spain during August, but the birding here will be fantastic and makes it one of the very best months to visit. Of course the autumn migration includes increased numbers of birds as juveniles accompany adults in their quest to reach Africa, many choosing August and September as the months to begin the journey south. In September we have the 2nd International Bird Fair at Tarifa and this coupled with migration, makes Andalucia the place to be for birding this year. The Bird Fair dates are 24th, 25th and 26th September, why not combine it for a deserved birding holiday? As usual, Peter Jones, Stephen Daly, Jesús Contreras and Mick Richardson will be pleased to lead you on one of their famous day tours, see below.

Martial Eagle Polemaetus bellicosus by Peter Jones
|
|
The Martial Eagle Polemaetus bellicosus is the largest of all African eagles and can grow to 83cm in length and has a huge wingspan of up to 260cm. It is the only member of the genus Polemaetus and is confined to sub-Saharan Africa. Immature birds take up to 7 years to develop their adult plumage and although they become independent once they leave the nest, they often stay in their natal area for up to 6 months, after which they tend to disperse over wide areas. A bird of open country, the Martial Eagle usually will seek some large tree to build its nest, although in the absence of trees it will use electricity pylons i.e. in the Karoo desert (South Africa). The nest is a massive construction and is used year after year, it can measure over 2m in diameter and 1m deep!
The Martial Eagle usually hunts by soaring high above its territory and will stoop rapidly to surprise its prey, less frequently they will use high vantage points, such as trees, from which to survey the ground for prey. Food mostly comprises of medium sized animals and birds such as hares, mongoose, hyrax, francolin, guineafowl and bustards, but they are known to take birds up to the size of a stork and on several occasions they have been seen taking animals up to the size of young impala photograph to the right, a fearsome predator! The size of territory depends on the all year abundance of prey, but generally they mostly measure around 1000 km², although in the most favourable areas some nests can be as close as 10km apart.
Although the Martial Eagle can be found in all sub-Saharan Africa, they are most common in the more southerly areas such as Kenya, Botswana and South Africa. They are more easily seen in protected areas and large parks wherever the food is abundant and the environment is suitable. It prefers open savannah and semi desert regions, although some trees are necessary for nesting. These eagles have a very slow reproduction rate, laying a maximum of one egg every two years. Incubation takes around 45 days and the chick is normally fledged at 100 days. There are concerns over the future for this species, especially where they come into contact with man. It suffers from shooting and poisoning as they are accused of killing livestock, though in truth domestic animals form a very small part of their diet.
Conservation is mostly concentrated on the education of farmers and direct protection of nest sites. Apart from the threats posed by illegal shooting and poisoning, the species also suffers from collision with power lines and more frequently drowning in steep sided farm reservoirs. It is estimated that the population in South Africa has reduced by 20% in the last three generations!
Why not join us at Spanish Nature and accompany us on one of our tours to see this magnificent eagle?

Gambia - A Very Special Winter Tour
|
A very special holiday! Why? Spanish Nature is run by folk with large families and wanted to design a special break for those seeking to relax after the riggers of Christmas. January can be a real anti-climax after the excitement of family celebrations and escaping mid-winter is also an appealing idea. And so we have put together a tour that not only offers great birding and wildlife opportunities, but also incorporates a unique view of the real Africa with the chance to spend days relaxing on boat rides and slumbering on the white sands of our beachside hotel. We believe it is a tour you will enjoy and at an affordable price, so why not join on this great opportunity to see Africa and relax with like-minded fellow travellers? To find out more click here |

| RECCE TRIPS - Feel brave enough for an adventure? |
|
A recce tour is a tour organized by the Spanish Nature team, but can involve some uncertainties. By definition we have not visited these areas previously and so cannot give the same quality guarantees as you are used to on other trips. The advantage is that prices are based on our actual cost price, which means an interesting advantage. Fellow travellers who came with us to Gambia enjoyed the adventure as much as we did and many asked to be informed about any new recce tours in the near future. The trip report of our latest "recce tour" to Gambia and Senegal is now available on our website. Follow this link to read everything about the adventures we had with accommodation, customs and much more.
China. The dates for our first China tour have now been fixed and we already have interest from 4 people! The plans are made and the itinerary is ready. It will certainly be a great trip. We will visit the Sichuan Province with its High Mountain Range and the grasslands of the Tibetan High Plateau. Sichuan is famous for its beautiful scenery and offers the best opportunities for seeing China's prime specialties. Read about it on our website Sichuan - Province of the four streams (click on the above link - China tour).
For those who want to book this tour, we advise not to wait too long, because we only have a limited number of places. We ask only for small deposits (€ 100,-- p/p) to make it easy to reserve your place.
Botswana. At this moment we are designing our tour to Botswana. It will probably be a 14 day tour of "luxury camping". Taking our own tents (and staff to build up the whole place) and staying in private places, not being disturbed by other tourists. Wildlife in Botswana will be great and the birding magnificent. We will travel by open game drive vehicles from one place to another or for the longer distances by small plane. We will make it an unforgettable experience! If you are interested just let us know and we will keep you informed during the development of this particular tour. Of course without any obligation from your side. For further details Contact us.
Important note: Because the group we take with us is normally limited to 6 people it is important to sign up quickly. If you are interested you can let us know your interest and we will keep you informed during the development of any particular tour. Of course without any obligation from your side. | Payments and our Deposit Payment Policy |
Spanish Nature started its activities in 2006, and it took us some time before we could negotiate the standard tour-agent conditions with hotels and ground agents. Of course we are all grown up now and in most cases we do not need a considerable deposit to be able to do all the necessary bookings. That is why we have reduced almost all our deposits to a very reasonable € 100 (or 150 US$), which is just a token of your confirmation that you want to come with us on a tour. We have worked hard to make sure our friends do not have to pay too much money in advance. You may also have noticed that we are now able to accept payments by PayPal, which also means that you can pay by all major credit cards.
