| Dear Pieter, |
We hope everyone has survived their winter in good shape and are now looking forward to summer?
The winter in our neck of the woods certainly surprised folk with record rainfall and damage. The infrastructure here took a real hammering and everywhere you go now is dotted with various degrees of roadworks! Peter has certainly had to change some of his routes for day trips here in the Serrania de Ronda, due to damage to many tracks and roads. However, must exercise restraint here, Spring has well and truly arrived with blue skies and glorious temperatures. Our summer residents are mostly back and the flowers, after such high rainfall, are spectacular.
Apart from a busy spring schedule, we have also been active with restructuring our payment terms and conditions. It has always been our intention, that as soon as it was financially possible, we could offer reductions to deposits upon booking a tour with Spanish Nature. We have now made it possible to pay both the deposit and tour fees using PayPal, which means we can now accept all major credit cards. Details of these changes appear in an article below 'Payments and our Deposit Payment Policy'. Good news, we believe, for fellow travellers.
We are now doing a tour specifically aimed at the photographer and with this year's destination in Ecuador, Pieter is becoming very excited at sharing his experience and hoping to help the budding nature photographer. We hope you enjoy reading our latest newsletter and as always we welcome any critique and ideas for future editions. Please keep well and in touch.
Warmest best wishes, Peter & Pieter Spanish Nature |
Day Tours in Spain
|
Combining a holiday in Spain with a day tour for birding has never been easier than in Andalucia, probably the most scenic and certainly one of the most important areas for wildlife in the Iberian Peninsular. Migration watching at the Strait of Gibraltar is a spectacle and truly one of nature's most special treats, Stephen Daly can take you to the best areas for witnessing firsthand this natural wonder. Whilst behind the Strait rising majestically to nearly 2000 metres is the Serranía de Ronda and Sierra de Grazalema, not just scenically stunning, but rich in specialist birds such as Bonelli's Eagle, here Peter Jones can guarantee an unforgettable day. Further north in the province Mick Richardson provides day tours in the Granada area. So if you value local knowledge and want a great day tour while in Spain, then look no further than Spanish Nature to provide you with a flavour of wildlife here in Andalucia.

The Magic Corridor - a wonder of bird migration by Peter Jones
|
|
I am so very privileged to live in the southern reaches of the Iberian Peninsular. Here we are able to witness firsthand the incredible spectacle that is bird migration. Enormous populations of birds from the northern reaches of Europe become concentrated during the late summer and autumn as they approach the short sea crossing over the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa.
Larger birds, such as Eagles, migrate during the daytime when they are able to take advantage of rising thermals and up-draughts, whilst many small birds migrate at night and take their direction from the position of the setting sun. As well as seeing the sun go down, small birds also seem to see the plane of polarized light caused by it, which calibrates their compass. Travelling at night also provides other benefits. Predators are avoided and the danger of dehydration, due to flying for long periods in warm, sunlit skies, is also reduced. An added benefit to night migration is also apparent when the air structure is cool and smooth and conducive to sustained, stable flight.

Flight gives birds the power to fly in any direction for as long as they have the energy to keep going. They have lightweight, hollow bones, navigation systems that simply defy belief, and an ingenious heat-conserving design that concentrates all blood circulation beneath layers of warm, waterproof plumage leaving them fit to face life in extreme climates.
Bird migration occurs in each natural region of the world, each country, each county and even each parish, where birds will come and go with the seasons. Many make vast journeys to reach their wintering grounds.
Bird migration evolved as a way for birds to exploit resources that are seasonally abundant and, equally important, to go elsewhere when the resources become scarce or harsh weather arrives. Many species can tolerate cold temperatures if food is plentiful, but if food is not available they must migrate. I guess the secrets of bird migration will remain as curious as any of life's other unsolved mysteries. Sadly, some never complete their journeys, but I always look forward to the spring and the return of those who have survived.
For all the complexities of migration I consider myself lucky to live in 'The Magic Corridor' that is for many birds the main flyway for autumn and spring passage between Europe and Africa.
Some viewing areas to watch both spring (March/May) and autumn (August/October) migration:
Tarifa area: Strategic observatories can be found both east and west of Tarifa and these are Algarrobo, Cabrito, Cazalla, Santuario, La Peña, Puerto de Bolonia and Puerto de Facinas.
Serrania de Ronda and Sierra de Grazalema: Puerto de las Palomas, Sierra de Libar, Acinipo, Casares

| NEW - Nature Photography Tour - Ecuador! |
|
Nature Photography Tour - a new and exciting addition to our tour schedule.
Ecuador - In the Middle of the world - 28th of August to 8th of September

We will stay (half of the time) around Quito with the Ecuadorian Family of our guide Juan Carlos, who has set up a very pleasant separate guest accommodation. Quito is very well located, in the Middle of the World (on the equator) to visit various National Parks.
This tour will run with special attention for the Nature Photographers. What does that mean? Photographers normally need more time and patience to get the right view of a bird which allows them to get a good shot. In this tour there will be absolutely no hurry to see as many birds as possible. We will take our time. This also means that those we really want to enjoy good birds and observe their behaviour will also be happy with the pace of the tour. The tour is less suitable for those going for the maximum number of birds. We will also keep the group small with a maximum of 6-8 people.
For all details of this trip have a look at Ecuador in the Middle of the World.

| NEW! Amazonia de Ecuador |
New "Recce tour" - Amazonia de Ecuador 18th to 28th of August 2010
As a pre-extention of our Ecuador tour - In the Middle of the World we have organised a trip to the Amazonia de Ecuador. We will fly from Quito to Coca, a journey taking only 30 minutes, from there we will follow the Napo River down the eastern slope of the Andes and benture into the steamy tropical lowlands of the Ecuadorian Amazon, known as the Oriente. The rain forests of this region are the most complex biological communities that exist, and provide the single greatest reservoir of genetic diversity on Earth - a small area can boast 500 species of birds, 400 species of fish and over 100 species of mammals. Here we will stay for 3 nights in the Sacha Lodge.
From the Oriente we will travel again by boat to Napo Lodge. Napo Wildlife Centre is an Amazon rainforest lodge located within Yasuni National Park, Ecuador. The Napo Wildlife Centre is a community-based ecotourism project that has turned the surrounding 82 square miles into a private reserve within Yasuní National Park. Ecuador's two most accessible parrot clay licks are located on Napo Wildlife Centre land and Giant Otters inhabit the lake in front of this amazon lodge.
You can also book for this pre-extension separately. For full detail see Recce tour - Amazonia de Ecuador.

| Galapagos Islands - In Darwin's Footsteps |
Galapagos Islands - In Darwin's Footsteps 10th to 19th of September 2010
Many people have a visit to the Galapagos Island high on their agenda and with good reason. It is a special place which you must have seen! We have developed a tour to the Galapagos Island as an extension of our tour to Ecuador, but of course it also can be booked separately. It is our policy to be always together with our guests, but for this tour we make an exception. A Spanish Nature tour leader will not really contribute a lot, because the schedule is fixed by the Cruise operator and a local naturalist is compulsory. We do not want to increase costs of the tour too much by coming on this tour with you. Our part of in this tour is to help you to select the tour which covers your wishes best. Have a look at our website Galapagos - In Darwin's Footsteps.
There are many more possibilities in all kind of classes and prices. Tell us what you like and we will find the best solutions for you.

| RECCE TRIPS - Why not join us for an adventure? |
|
Our "Recce" trips.
A recce tour is a tour organized by the Spanish Nature team, but can involve some uncertainties. By definition we have not visited these areas previously and so cannot give the same quality guarantees as you are used to on other trips. The advantage is that prices are based on our actual cost price, which means an interesting advantage, and of course we will do everything we can to make our fellow travelers happy, including changes of hotels or whatever necessary after consultation with all the group members. And then of course the unexpected which makes it special and a real adventure!
The trip report of our latest "recce tour" to Gambia and Senegal is now available on our website. Follow this link to read everything about the adventures we had with accommodation, customs and much more.
Fellow travellers who came with us enjoyed the adventure as much as we did and many asked already to be informed about any new recce tours in the near future.
At this moment we have planned the following Recce trips:
· August 2010 - Amazonia de Ecuador (to combine with our yearly Ecuador tour)
· End 2010 / Start 2011 - Botswana.
· June/July 2011 - China, Birding in Sichuan Province, with an extention to visit some highlights in China. (Xian, Great Wall etc.).
Important note: Because the group we take with us is normally limited to 6 people it is important to sign up quickly. If you are interested you can let us know your interest and we will keep you informed during the development of any particular tour. Of course without any obligation from your side. | Payments and our Deposit Payment Policy |
Spanish Nature started its activities in 2006, and it took some time before we could negotiate the standard tour-agent conditions with hotels and ground agents. Of course we are a bit grown up now and in most cases we do not need a considerable deposit to be able to do all the necessary bookings. That is why we have reduced almost all our deposits to a very reasonable € 100 (or 150 US$), which is just a token of your confirmation that you want to come with us on a tour. We have worked hard to make sure our friends do not have to pay too much money in advance. You may have also noticed that we are now able to accept payments by Paypal, which also means that you can pay by all major credit cards.
