Bird watching in Morocco. A winter’s birding tour in Morocco with the Andalucia Bird Society, the society’s first overseas tour! With 15 members, we toured the marshland habitats of the northwestern Atlantic coast of Morocco and sampled not only the varied birdlife of Morocco, but also to some extent gave ourselves a taste of this wonderful country. We were based in Asilah and made excursions to the Oued Tahadart flood plains, the lower Loukos marshes near Larache and ventured south to Moulay Bousselham and the large marsh and lagoon of Merja Zerga. The society were also on a mission to spread the word for the necessity of locals to keep a watch for Slender-billed Curlew and to this end the society donated a telescope to the local guide and guardian at the marshland of Merja Zerga. In all around 111 species were seen during the trip. It was an enormously successful and enjoyable tour.

Costa Rica is an all round destination, good food, great accommodation, scenically beautiful, fantastic wildlife and wonderfully friendly people. It always amazes me how varied a landscape such a small country offers and the diversity of birds reflects the great range of habitats present. If you haven’t yet been then go or at least put it on your life’s wish list! By way of relaxing before and after our main tour, we booked an extra night prior to the start and at the end of our birding tour. We used the Hotel Bougainvillea in San Jose as our start and end point. I thoroughly recommend this hotel, set within its own grounds, beautifully landscaped and with several birds and plants to interest those given to strolling through gardens at their own pace.

The Gambia is one of the smallest and safest countries in Africa. After only a 6 hours flight, without any time difference, you will arrive at Banjul on the Gambian Coast, which is as colourfully African as you can image. The Gambia enjoys virtually uninterrupted sunshine with almost no rainfall from November to June, which makes this country a very good place to escape the cold and grey winter months in northern Europe. Birdlife is abundant and since in 1977 a Wildlife Act was passed for several areas in The Gambia, which are now protected Nature Reserves. More than 540 birdspecies are recorded. The Gambia, the place to enjoy a really relaxed birding holiday
